If you are new to paddling, or just trying to get out on the water and enjoy the great outdoors, we recommend you join us on Flax Pond at Nickerson State Park. Freshwater ponds are a great choice because they are non-tidal and provide the most wind cover from trees on windier days. This means you can go out almost any day at any time; we can't wait to meet you at Flax Pond (Brewster).
If you are adventuring in an area that has tides we recommend as a general rule of thumb to leave about one-two hours before high tide so that way you are able to take advantage of the slack tide. Another option could be departing right after low tide. Like a pendulum builds momentum as the "bob" falls, tides build strength meaning paddling right after low tide offers an easy adventure for the first hour, when tides have little momentum. After a break, the rising tides have picked up and help carry you back to the landing.
If you would like to explore the Nauset Marsh at Hemenway Landing we have a very informative page on routes based on experience, best times to leave, and safety information under the safety tab.
Check Tides: https://www.boatma.com/tides/Cape-Cod.html
The strongest flood and ebb currents typically occur halfway between the tide peaks. The weakest currents occur at the predicted low- and high-tides and are called slack tides. The same tides are set about 12 hours apart from each other and tides each day are set forward about 55 minutes. So if high tide is at 10 AM it would also approximately be at 10 PM the same day, and 10:55 AM/PM the following day.
It depends on your level of experience paddling, whether you are in a kayak or standing on a paddle board, and the location of your adventure. Typically, more experienced paddlers can paddle in winds up to 15mph, and, we don't recommend beginners go out along in winds over 12mph. We also do not rent when winds are at the higher limit. However, if you are wanting to go out and adventure on a windier day, kayaking is always easier than paddle boarding in winds, because standing up your body acts like a sail. Ponds as compared to more open areas like bays and marshes, provide more protection from winds because of tree foliage. Consider visiting us on Flax Pond at Nickerson State Park on windier days.
You should read all of our safety information. It is your responsibility to know wind conditions, currents (if applicable), sun and heat dangers and how to mitigate them, among other safety knowledge that should be acquired before your adventure!
Our kayaks are super simple and easy to figure out and our staff is always able to give a demonstration of how to use the equipment on land if needed before you set off. Our stand up paddle boards are sturdy and are easy to balance on and have easy carry handles. The best place to practice the technique and get comfortable on the water will be a pond because of they are non-tidal and provide shelter from wind effects mentioned above.
Another great idea would be to take a lesson with us. This can be done on the pond, or in a tidal environment where you'll learn paddle technique and environmental factors.
Finally, you could opt to join a low tide kayak tour. Perfect for beginner paddlers and families! We'll depart shortly after low tide, paddling against an incoming high tide throughout the entire duration of your tour. Like a pendulum builds momentum as the "bob" falls, tides build strength meaning our paddle to the outermost beach for a break will be a breeze; after the rising tides have picked up and help carry us back to shore. Settled down in the channels of the Nauset Marsh, you'll experience a diverse ecosystem of aquatic and shoreline animals. During our break, there will be ample time to search for low-tide treasures and take a dip in the Atlantic.
We have a recommended packing list on the bottom our safety information page.
