Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to go out?

If you are on a pond you don't have to worry about tides, and typically the trees provide the most wind cover for windier days.  If you are adventuring in an area that has tides we recommend as a general rule of thumb to leave about three hours before high tide so that way you are able to take advantage of the slack tide.  If you need a recommendation we have a rental tab or if you would like to explore the Nauset Marsh at Hemenway Landing we have a very informative page on routes based on experience, best times to leave, and safety information under the safety tab.

What is slack tide?

The strongest flood and ebb currents usually occur before or near the time of the high and low tides. The weakest currents occur between the flood and ebb currents and are called slack tides and typically occur half way between the tide peaks.  Same tides are set about 12 hours apart from each other and tides each day are set forward about 55 minutes.  So if high tide is at 10 AM it would also approximately be at 10 PM the same day, and 10:55 AM/PM the following day.

Where can I check the tides?

We use https://www.boatma.com/tides/Cape-Cod.html and input Wellfleet as the location.  When taking routes and information off our website it is relative to this link Wellfleet.

To tides change?

Yes, the tides change each day and are set back approximately 55 minutes each day, similar to how sunrise and sunsets change slightly, but not nearly as drastic, each day as well.  So if high tide is at 10 AM it would also approximately be at 10 PM the same day, and 10:55 AM/PM the following day.

Is the tide the same on the bayside and the oceanside?

Yes tides are the same time on both sides of the Cape, but the tide affects the bayside much more than the oceanside.  Tides can also be off set based on the environment the water is rushing into or out of.

What winds are too dangerous to go out in?

It depends on your level of experience paddling, whether you are in a kayak or standing on a paddleboard, and the location of your adventure.  Typically, more experienced paddlers can paddle in winds up to 15mph, and, we don't recommend beginingers go out along in winds over 12mph.  We also do not rent when winds are at the higher limit.  However, if you are wanting to go out and adventure on a windier day, kayaking is always easier than paddleboarding in winds, so are ponds as compared to more open areas like bays, which provide little tree cover when contrasted with ponds.

You should read all of our safety information. It is your responsibility to know wind conditions, currents (if applicable), sun and heat dangers and how to mitigate them, among other safety knowledge that should be acquired before your adventure!

How much colder will it be on the water?

Depending on windchill it could be much cooler on the water but you should account for about a ten degree difference on an average day with light wind.  Dressing in layers is always a good idea as well as bringing a dry towel you should consider leaving on shore for after your paddle.

Does it matter if I have never kayaked/paddle boarded before?

No our sit on top kayaks are super simple to figure out and our staff is always able to give a demonstration of how to use the equipment if needed.  Our stand up paddle boards are sturdy and are easy to balance on and have easy carry handles.

We offer private lessons of 2 or more people for both kayaking and paddle boarding.

We also offer professionally guided kayak tours of Nauset Marsh if you want to adventure our with our knowledgable tour guides/instructors.

What is the difference between a SIT ON TOP and a more traditional SIT INSIDE kayak?

SIT ON TOP kayaks leave your legs free from an enclosed cabin and you feel like you are sitting on top of the water.  They have supported back seats with natural divits as replacements for foot pegs.  They also have convenient dry docks in between your legs.  Futhermore, drain holes ensure any water that collects in the kayak is quickly drained without return of water.  They are light and a great option for all ages, whether its kids wanting to jump on and off, or older adults who may have a more difficult time getting inside a more traditional kayak.

SIT INSIDE kayaks are more traditional.  They offer a dry dock typically at the back of the kayak, and also offer a molded seat with support and adjustable foot pegs.  The major downside to a more traditional sit inside kayak is the worry of water collecting inside the cabin potentially sinking the kayak and the fact they are more difficult to get inside and out of.

What comes with my rental?

Each rental will come with one lifejacket per seat, and one paddle per seat.  This means single kayaks come with the lifejacket and paddle, same with stand up paddle boards.  Tandem kayaks are the only rental that come with two lifejackets and two appropriate paddles.

Additional Paddles $5/day

Additional Lifejackets $5/day
